There are many different walkable routes to the summit. Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa, offers several routes for climbers. Each route varies in terms of terrain, volcano rocks, scenery, and duration. Here are the main routes:
1. **Marangu Route** (Coca-Cola Route): Known for its relative ease and the only route with hut accommodations. It typically takes 5-6 days and offers a shorter trek but with a lower acclimatization rate.Marangu route was used by first climbers to reach Kilimanjaro summit, Hans Meyers, and others in 1889.
2. **Machame Route** (Whiskey Route): Offers more varied scenery and a better acclimatization profile due to its longer duration (6-7 days). It’s considered more challenging than Marangu. People are advised to choose 7 days to give time to rest at Karanga camp. Karanga camp is extra night before last night at Barafu camp for summit.
3. **Lemosho Route**: A longer route (7-8 days) that provides a scenic approach and allows for better acclimatization. It’s less crowded compared to Marangu and Machame.
4. **Rongai Route**: Approaches from the north and is a quieter route. It typically takes 6-7 days and is considered slightly easier in terms of terrain but still requires good acclimatization. Same wise, 7 days Rongai route is best hiking approach, because trekking time is 3 hours daily.
5. **Umbwe Route**: Known for being the most direct but also the most challenging, with steep climbs and technical sections. It typically takes 6-7 days and is recommended for experienced climbers.
6. **Northern Circuit Route**: The longest route (8-9 days) and offers a unique perspective of the mountain. It’s less crowded and provides ample time for acclimatization.
Each route has its own set of advantages and hiking up slowly, so the choice depends on your experience level, the time you have, and the type of experience you want.
